It's time to do a detox when you start noticing: you're finding it harder to get out of bed each morning, you suffer with several colds a year, your waistline has expanded, you find an increased need for antihistamines, "I feel bloated" is becoming your mantra, your libido is flagging, you can't survive without that coffee and sugar hit, PMS is turning you into a walking time bomb, you're overwhelmed by the demands on your time, and / or that face looking back at you in the mirror has lost its sparkle. |
Statistics on breast cancer can be pretty frightening. In fact, according to recent figures one in 8 women up to age 75 are likely to develop breast cancer within their lifetime, with the risk increasing with age. About two-thirds of breast cancers are hormone receptor positive. This means that the cancer growth is driven by the level of female hormones. Poor detoxification of your hormones and having an imbalance in your hormones, such as oestrogen excess, can make your risk of developing the disease higher. Other factors that contribute to an increased risk in breast cancer include: ... Many people see me for weight loss and for some of these people it is a simple case of improving their diet, reducing kilojoule intake and exercising a little more. However, for many there are underlying factors that makes reducing body fat almost impossible. My job as their practitioner is to discover what has turned off fat burning. It can be so frustrating and challenging for people to reduce body fat when certain body processes have gone a little haywire for them. This in turn switches off their body's ability to release fat from fat cells. I usually refer my patients for blood tests, saliva hormone testing, live blood analysis and sometimes digestion function tests. I look for signs of and causes of: Many of people believe they have a food allergy because they react to a food in some way. However, most of the time it’s not an actual allergy but sensitivity to the food they are experiencing. A “true” allergy is where there is an IgE mediated immune reaction within the body. These allergies affect about two to three percent of the population only. An IgE allergy reaction can result in symptoms such as a rash or hives and can also be as drastic as anaphylaxis which is where the mouth and tongue swell along with constriction of the airways. People diagnosed with this type of allergy carry an EpiPen with them in case of exposure as extreme reactions are life threatening. An IgE reaction is usually noticed very soon after consuming the food. The most common allergy foods are peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, soy beans and soy products, dairy, wheat, oranges, shellfish and fish. Food intolerance or sensitivity is where the body has developed an IgG mediated immune reaction to a food. This is where IgG antibodies are created in the body after it recognises the protein in that food as an allergen or “enemy”. Now that Australia has been labelled "The Fattest Nation on Earth" we need to seriously look at Metabolic Syndrome and what that means for us and our long-term health. This syndrome is where pre-diabetes / diabetes (or poor blood glucose management and metabolism) and the onset of cardiovascular disease can affect you at the same time. It can be a slippery slope to really poor health if it is not addressed and corrected using the best nutrition and lifestyle management. Metabolic syndrome can affect our children too, not just adults, and this is where it becomes very worrying. You or your loved ones may have this syndrome or be at high risk if you have: As men move into their fifties and beyond, their testosterone (male hormone) levels can drop and their oestrogen (female hormones) may rise. This leads to what we know as the "grumpy old man syndrome". Living with a male with this syndrome can make many women feel far from affectionate as they deal with the moodiness, weight gain and increased snoring. Do not despair, there is help at hand! Much can be done through diet, lifestyle and supplemented nutrients and herbs that can make a huge difference to male hormone balance. Some of the symptoms you might have if you have decreased testosterone include: Following a cellular health analysis (CHA - body composition) test with me, you will receive a report which graphs your body fat, muscle mass, cellular health, toxicity, fluid retention, your energy production capability and your biological age. The report also tells your "fat distribution index" which is based on your waistline measurement. If you are carrying a bit too much of a "tyre" around your waist, your fat distribution index may state "moderate" or "high" risk. The "risk" is of developing chronic disease such as heart disease or diabetes. Q: I’m in my early 20s and get heaps of pimples on my back. I don’t want to take antibiotics – is there something natural that can help? A: Herbs such as chaste tree, berberis and clivers (also known as cleavers) are excellent for treating acne. I may suggest tablets that contain these herbs, or a blended liquid herbal medicine. A liquid herbal mixture can also be made to apply topically to improve healing, and it’s also important that you get enough vitamin C and zinc, which are crucial for skin health. There are many factors that affect skin health and these are.. It's pretty easy to get carried away with the festive cheer and wonderful abundance of food.
