foodwatershelter incorporated (fws) is an Australian not-for-profit, non-denominational, non-governmental charity that builds and runs eco-friendly orphanages with educational, social and health facilities for children in developing countries. In doing so, fws aims to enhance the current and future lives of the children they provide for so that they are able to contribute to their community and have a better quality of life.
They help facilitate this in a number of ways including providing orphans with nourishing meals, access to water, a safe shelter, access to health facilities (including AIDS care), after school social and educational programs and weekend classes covering environmental and health issues for the wider community.
Jan needs your help to make this movie event (see below) a great success to raise funds to help with fws' latest project - the building of Kesho Leo children's village. As you can see by the flyer, the village will house 40 orphaned children giving them the best possible start in life.
The children's village will be built with the combined efforts of a skeleton volunteer team and local labourers. It will consist of:
- sleeping huts each built to accommodate 5 children and 1 live-in carer
- one live-in manager's residence
- two volunteer bedrooms
- a large “play room”
- an African-style kitchen (clay-oven)
- a library room
- an interactive study area
- a communal living area
- an early-learning schoolroom
- an e-learning vocational training centre for staff, kesho kids and local villagers
- a separate outhouse will consist of toilets, showers and a laundry.
A farming plot will also be established (so each child can maintain their African culture by learning to grow and harvest crops such as corn (known locally as ‘maize’), bananas and coffee beans.
You can see why Jan is particularly passionate about helping fws achieve all this for these children whose future otherwise could be quite bleak.
On the night of the movie, aside from a fabulous door prize, there will be a generous raffle. Prizes include a beauty spa voucher, imported beer package, wines from Darlington Estate winery and some great cookbooks. Great prizes and a great movie!
