Food-Body-HealthIn focus - Licorice

Licorice is quite an amazing herb. The root of the plant is used in naturopathic medicine and it can be either liquid extract or tablet form as well as tea. One of the active ingredients of licorice is 50 times sweeter than sugar, making it one of the most pleasant herbs to take in liquid form.

Licorice has many uses in natural medicine. Due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects on mucous membranes it is used to treat respiratory and digestive problems such as asthma, bronchitis, peptic ulcers and constipation. It also supports the immune system and helps to fight infections such as sore throat and gum disease.

Licorice has an effect on hormones, in particular when combined with the herb peony it helps lower raised testosterone levels. This is especially useful in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. To find out if your testosterone or other hormones are out of balance we recommend a salivary hormone test.

One of our favourite uses of licorice at Food, Body + Health is for supporting the nervous system. It helps the body cope with stress via its effect on the adrenal glands and the hormone cortisol. We often prescribe licorice for those clients that are completely stressed out, low in energy, very busy at work and/or home and feel like they can't quite cope with everything! Does this sound like you?!
